2024-01-24Makefiles: Rename top-level Makefiles from .inc to .mkMartin Roth
The .inc suffix is confusing to various tools as it's not specific to Makefiles. This means that editors don't recognize the files, and don't open them with highlighting and any other specific editor functionality. This issue is also seen in the release notes generation script where Makefiles get renamed before running cloc. The rest of the Makefiles will be renamed in following commits. 2023-11-30build system: Exempt `make *config` from strict symbol checksPatrick Georgi
The "config" targets exist to edit the .config file, and so they should be more forgiving with invalid configs (that they'll convert into valid configs on save). They will still emit warnings about invalid symbols, but not exit with an error. The regular build process still fails if the .config looks unexpected (for example when there's an unknown config flag). Upstream reimplemented KCONFIG_STRICT, just calling it KCONFIG_WERROR. Therefore, adapt our build system and documentation. Upstream is less strict at this time, but there's a proposed patch that got imported. TEST=`util/abuild/abuild -C` output (config.h and config.build) remains the same. Also, the failure type fixed in https://review.coreboot.org/c/coreboot/+/11272 can be detected, which I tested by manually breaking our Kconfig in a similar way. The patches for kconfig need to be in a format compatible with the quilt tool, and usually also contain a header with some additional info like the git commit. This header is in the same format as patches produced by `git format-patch`, but the diff style git uses is incompatible with quilt and there does not seem to be a straightforward way to format the diff section to work. Add some documentation for a method I found to go from a git commit to a quilt compatible patch with git headers. With parser.tab.h depending on parser.tab.c it's possible for make to initiate the creation of parser.tab.c, then try to compile it, even though parser.tab.h is still missing. This isn't normally an issue yet because bison creates them both at a time but with pre-compiled files this will become a problem. Pattern rules support (until recently as a special case that no other type of rule could implement) multiple targets that are actually treated as "one command creates multiple output files" so use that to state the relationship properly. 2021-07-13util/kconfig: Uprev to Linux 5.13's kconfigPatrick Georgi
This was originally several commits that had to be squashed into one because the intermediate states weren't able to build coreboot: - one to remove everything that wasn't our own code, leaving only regex.[ch], toada.c, description.md and Makefile.inc. - one to copy in Linux 5.13's scripts/kconfig and adapt Makefile.inc to make the original Makefile work again. - adapt abuild to use olddefconfig, simplifying matters. - apply patches in util/kconfig/patches. - Some more adaptations to the libpayload build system. The patches are now in util/kconfig/patches/, reverse applying them should lead to a util/kconfig/ tree that contains exactly the Linux version + our own 5 files. When updating an old .config file that has a symbol that has been removed from the current Kconfig tree, kconfig will generate a warning and fail to save the updated file. This is incredibly annoying, and not the goal when trying to eliminate Kconfig warnings. Instead of generating a warning, just print a message that it's being ignored. This will remove the offending symbol, while allowing the updated config file to be saved. Split the change from 1 line to 3 lines to keep it at 80 characters. Add a savedefconfig target and the help for it to the kconfig makefile. The main advantage I found for using defconfigs instead of the full .config is that they require less maintenence, so long as reasonable default values are set when adding new config options. When the defconfig is expanded, it will use default values for all options not saved in the defconfig. This cuts the size of a saved config from 500ish lines to roughly 20 lines. savedefconfig was added to the linux kernel in commit id 7cf3d73b4360e91b14326632ab1aeda4cb26308d Change-Id: I45f3dc87b773fb6e9ee53e32fdcafff1f53074d2 Signed-off-by: Martin Roth <gaumless@gmail.com> Reviewed-on: http://review.coreboot.org/10462 Tested-by: build bot (Jenkins) Reviewed-by: Paul Menzel <paulepanter@users.sourceforge.net> Reviewed-by: Stefan Reinauer <stefan.reinauer@coreboot.org> Reviewed-by: Patrick Georgi <pgeorgi@google.com>

2012-04-02Force coreboot mconf to create temp files in the output directoryVadim Bendebury
This change partially addresses the problem with attempting to generate coreboot image out of tree. The configuration step fails when in cheroot, if the destination directory is placed in /tmp. The problem is that the mconf package tries renaming the temporary file created in the local directory into the destination config file. If the destination root and the local directory are located on different file systems, the rename operation fails. The proper fix (still upcoming) would be to identify all places where mconf creates temp files, and make sure that all temp files get created in the destination tree. This change modifies just one location, which prevents building out of tree in the most common case. Test: run the following in the coreboot directory in chroot: (coreboot) cp config.lumpy .config (coreboot) /bin/rm -rf /tmp/cb (coreboot) CROSS_COMPILE=i686-pc-linux-gnu- make obj=/tmp/cb oldconfig (coreboot) CROSS_COMPILE=i686-pc-linux-gnu- make obj=/tmp/cb Observe the build succeed (it was failing during the config phase before this change) Change-Id: If4506e984b8afc192a1689c7b0aa956dd35f66c6 Signed-off-by: Vadim Bendebury <vbendeb@chromium.org> Reviewed-on: http://review.coreboot.org/815 Tested-by: build bot (Jenkins) Reviewed-by: Ronald G.
