2022-06-01cbfs: Add CBFS_TYPE_INTEL_FIT and exclude it from CBFS verificationJulius Werner
The Intel Firmware Interface Table (FIT) is a bit of an annoying outlier among CBFS files because it gets manipulated by a separate utility (ifittool) after cbfstool has already added it to the image. This will break file hashes created for CBFS verification. This is not actually a problem when booting, since coreboot never actually loads the FIT from CBFS -- instead, it's only in the image for use by platform-specific mechanisms that run before coreboot's bootblock. But having an invalid file hash in the CBFS image is confusing when you want to verify that the image is correctly built for verification. This patch adds a new CBFS file type "intel_fit" which is only used for the intel_fit (and intel_fit_ts, if applicable) file containing the FIT. cbfstool will avoid generating and verifying file hashes for this type, like it already does for the "bootblock" and "cbfs header" types. (Note that this means that any attempt to use the CBFS API to actually access this file from coreboot will result in a verification error when CBFS verification is enabled.) 2022-06-01cbfs: Rename TYPE_FIT to TYPE_FIT_PAYLOADJulius Werner
There are too many "FIT" in firmware land. In order to reduce possible confusion of CBFS_TYPE_FIT with the Intel Firmware Interface Table, this patch renames it to CBFS_TYPE_FIT_PAYLOAD (including the cbfstool argument, so calling scripts will now need to replace `-t fit` with `-t fit_payload`). 2021-03-13cbfstool: Add support for platform "fixups" when modifying bootblockJulius Werner
To support the new CONFIG_CBFS_VERIFICATION feature, cbfstool needs to update the metadata hash embedded in the bootblock code every time it adds or removes a CBFS file. This can lead to problems on certain platforms where the bootblock needs to be specially wrapped in some platform-specific data structure so that the platform's masked ROM can recognize it. If that data structure contains any form of hash or signature of the bootblock code that is checked on every boot, it will no longer match if cbfstool modifies it after the fact. In general, we should always try to disable these kinds of features where possible (they're not super useful anyway). But for platforms where the hardware simply doesn't allow that, this patch introduces the concept of "platform fixups" to cbfstool. Whenever cbfstool finds a metadata hash anchor in a CBFS image, it will run all built-in "fixup probe" functions on that bootblock to check if it can recognize it as the wrapper format for a platform known to have such an issue. If so, it will register a corresponding fixup function that will run whenever it tries to write back modified data to that bootblock. The function can then modify any platform-specific headers as necessary. As first supported platform, this patch adds a fixup for Qualcomm platforms (specifically the header format used by sc7180), which recalculates the bootblock body hash originally added by util/qualcomm/createxbl.py. (Note that this feature is not intended to support platform-specific signature schemes like BootGuard directly in cbfstool. For anything that requires an actual secret key, it should be okay if the user needs to run a platform-specific signing tool on the final CBFS image before flashing. This feature is intended for the normal unsigned case (which on some platforms may be implemented as signing with a well-known key) so that on a board that is not "locked down" in any way the normal use case of manipulating an image with cbfstool and then directly flashing the output file stays working with CONFIG_CBFS_VERIFICATION.) 2020-12-03cbfs: Add verification for RO CBFS metadata hashJulius Werner
This patch adds the first stage of the new CONFIG_CBFS_VERIFICATION feature. It's not useful to end-users in this stage so it cannot be selected in menuconfig (and should not be used other than for development) yet. With this patch coreboot can verify the metadata hash of the RO CBFS when it starts booting, but it does not verify individual files yet. Likewise, verifying RW CBFSes with vboot is not yet supported. Verification is bootstrapped from a "metadata hash anchor" structure that is embedded in the bootblock code and marked by a unique magic number. This anchor contains both the CBFS metadata hash and a separate hash for the FMAP which is required to find the primary CBFS. Both are verified on first use in the bootblock (and halt the system on failure). The CONFIG_TOCTOU_SAFETY option is also added for illustrative purposes to show some paths that need to be different when full protection against TOCTOU (time-of-check vs. time-of-use) attacks is desired. For normal verification it is sufficient to check the FMAP and the CBFS metadata hash only once in the bootblock -- for TOCTOU verification we do the same, but we need to be extra careful that we do not re-read the FMAP or any CBFS metadata in later stages. This is mostly achieved by depending on the CBFS metadata cache and FMAP cache features, but we allow for one edge case in case the RW CBFS metadata cache overflows (which may happen during an RW update and could otherwise no longer be fixed because mcache size is defined by RO code). This code is added to demonstrate design intent but won't really matter until RW CBFS verification can be supported. In order to support booting a GNU/Linux payload on non x86, the FIT format should be used, as it is the defacto standard on ARM. Due to greater complexity of FIT it is not converted to simple ELF format. Add support for autodecting FIT payloads and add them as new CBFS_TYPE 'fit'. The payload is included as is, with no special header. The code can determine the type at runtime using the CBFS_TYPE field. Support for parsing FIT payloads in coreboot is added in a follow on commit. Compression of FIT payloads is not supported, as the FIT sections might be compressed itself. Starting at this point a CBFS payload/ can be either of type FIT or SELF. Tested on Cavium SoC. 2016-08-27cbfs: Add "struct" file type and associated helpersJulius Werner
This patch adds functionality to compile a C data structure into a raw binary file, add it to CBFS and allow coreboot to load it at runtime. This is useful in all cases where we need to be able to have several larger data sets available in an image, but will only require a small subset of them at boot (a classic example would be DRAM parameters) or only require it in certain boot modes. This allows us to load less data from flash and increase boot speed compared to solutions that compile all data sets into a stage. Each structure has to be defined in a separate .c file which contains no functions and only a single global variable. The data type must be serialization safe (composed of only fixed-width types, paying attention to padding). It must be added to CBFS in a Makefile with the 'struct' file processor. The constant for ppc64 is 'hotstuff'. For many reasons. Note that line 2894 of elf.h is not indented. This is because in the original the line begins with a space. Checkpatch rejects that. Checkpatch also rejects changing the space to a tab because that makes it more than 80 chars. I rejected breaking the line because it makes it even less readable. All the changes forced by checkpatch make the code less readable. Herman Hollerith would be proud. Change-Id: I21f049fe8c655a30f17dff694b8f42789ad9efb7 Signed-off-by: Ronald G. 2015-09-01cbfstool: allow compression at file header levelDaisuke Nojiri
Currently, compression is only allowed at subheader level (e.g. cbfs_stage, cbfs_payload_segment). This change adds compression field to each file's header so that any cbfs file can be compressed. With the necessary additions in coreboot and libpayload, the following sample code can load a compressed file: const char *name = "foo.bmp"; struct cbfs_file *file = cbfs_get_file(media, name); void *dst = malloc(ntohl(file->uncompressed_size)); dst = cbfs_get_file_content(media, name, type, file, dst); cbfs_stage and cbfs_payload_segment continue to support compression at subheader level because stages and payloads have to be decompressed to the load address, which is stored in the subheader. For these, file level compression should be turned off. 2015-05-13cbfstool: New image format w/ required FMAP and w/o CBFS master headerSol Boucher
These new-style firmware images use the FMAP of the root of knowledge about their layout, which allows them to have sections containing raw data whose offset and size can easily be determined at runtime or when modifying or flashing the image. Furthermore, they can even have multiple CBFSes, each of which occupies a different FMAP region. It is assumed that the first entry of each CBFS, including the primary one, will be located right at the start of its region. This means that the bootblock needs to be moved into its own FMAP region, but makes the CBFS master header obsolete because, with the exception of the version and alignment, all its fields are redundant once its CBFS has an entry in the FMAP. The version code will be addressed in a future commit before the new format comes into use, while the alignment will just be defined to 64 bytes in both cbfstool and coreboot itself, since there's almost no reason to ever change it in practice. The version code field and all necessary coreboot changes will come separately. 2014-09-08ARM: Generalize armv7 as arm.Gabe Black
There are ARM systems which are essentially heterogeneous multicores where some cores implement a different ARM architecture version than other cores. A specific example is the tegra124 which boots on an ARMv4 coprocessor while most code, including most of the firmware, runs on the main ARMv7 core. To support SOCs like this, the plan is to generalize the ARM architecture so that all versions are available, and an SOC/CPU can then select what architecture variant should be used for each component of the firmware; bootblock, romstage, and ramstage. 2014-02-02Add section header parsing and use it in the mk-payload stepRonald G. Minnich
This completes the improvements to the ELF file parsing code. We can now parse section headers too, across all 4 combinations of word size and endianness. I had hoped to completely remove the use of htonl until I found it in cbfs_image.c. That's a battle for another day. There's now a handy macro to create magic numbers in host byte order. I'm using it for all the PAYLOAD_SEGMENT_* constants and maybe we can use it for the others too, but this is sensitive code and I'd rather change one thing at a time. To maximize the ease of use for users, elf parsing is accomplished with just one function: int elf_headers(const struct buffer *pinput, Elf64_Ehdr *ehdr, Elf64_Phdr **pphdr, Elf64_Shdr **pshdr) which requires the ehdr and pphdr pointers to be non-NULL, but allows the pshdr to be NULL. If pshdr is NULL, the code will not try to read in section headers. To satisfy our powerful scripts, I had to remove the ^M from an unrelated microcode file. BUG=None TEST=Build a peppy image (known to boot) with old and new versions and verify they are bit-for-bit the same. This was also fully tested across all chromebooks for building and booting and running chromeos. BRANCH=None Change-Id: I54dad887d922428b6175fdb6a9cdfadd8a6bb889 Signed-off-by: Ronald G. 2013-02-05cbfstool: Add cbfs_image new CBFS image manipulation API.Hung-Te Lin
Current cbfstool implementation is relying on global variables to pass processed data, and the calculation of address is based on x86 architecture (ex, always assuming 0x0000 as invalid address), not easy to be used on platforms without top-aligned memory mapping. This CL is a first step to start a new cbfstool without global variables, and to prevent assuming memory layout in x86 mode. The first published APIs are for reading and writing existing CBFS ROM image files (and to find file entries in a ROM file). Read cbfs_image.h for detail usage of each API function. 2009-05-08I have made a very simple mod to cbfstool that is compatible with theRonald G. Minnich
src/lib/ code in coreboot. I.e. the tool changes but the coreboot code does not. Currently, as cbfstool manages the ROM, there are files and empty space. To allocate files, the code does, first, a walk of the headers and, if that fails, does a brute-force search of the rest of the space. We all agree that the brute-force search has lots of problems from a performance and correctness standpoint. I've made a slight change. Instead of an "empty space" area with no valid headers, I've made a header for the empty space. So cbfs creation looks like this: - set up the boot block - create a file, of type CBFS_COMPONENT_NULL, that contains the empty space. CBFS_COMPONENT_NULL was already defined in cbfs.h Here's an example: [rminnich@xcpu2 cbfstool]$ ./cbfstool testcbfs create 1048576 2048 (cbfstool) E: Unable to open (null): Bad address [rminnich@xcpu2 cbfstool]$ ./cbfstool testcbfs print testcbfs: 1024 kB, bootblocksize 2048, romsize 1048576, offset 0x0 Alignment: 16 bytes Name Offset Type Size 0x0 0xffffffff 1046456 So how do we create a new file? It's easy: walk the files and find a file of type CBFS_COMPONENT_NULL, which is as large or larger than the file you are trying to create. Then you use that file. - if the file is the same size as the NULL file, then it's easy: take it - if the file is smaller than the NULL file, you split the NULL file into two parts. note that this works in the base case: the base case is that the whole storage is CBFS_COMPONENT_NULL. Here's an example of adding a file. [rminnich@xcpu2 cbfstool]$ ./cbfstool testcbfs add-stage testfixed t [rminnich@xcpu2 cbfstool]$ ./cbfstool testcbfs print testcbfs: 1024 kB, bootblocksize 2048, romsize 1048576, offset 0x0 Alignment: 16 bytes Name Offset Type Size t 0x0 stage 23176 0x5ab0 0xffffffff 1023240 Note that the NULL split and got smaller. But the entire ROM is still contained by the two files. To walk this entire rom will require two FLASH accesses. Add another file: [rminnich@xcpu2 cbfstool]$ ./cbfstool testcbfs add-stage testfixed tt [rminnich@xcpu2 cbfstool]$ ./cbfstool testcbfs print testcbfs: 1024 kB, bootblocksize 2048, romsize 1048576, offset 0x0 Alignment: 16 bytes Name Offset Type Size t 0x0 stage 23176 tt 0x5ab0 stage 23176 0xb560 0xffffffff 1000024 [rminnich@xcpu2 cbfstool]$ So, taking current ROMs as an example, I can reduce FLASH accesses for cbfs from (potentially) thousands to (typically) less than 10. Index: fs.c Changes for readability and cleanliness. Move common blobs of code to functions. New function: rom_alloc,which allocates files by finding NULL files and using/splitting. Other changes as needed to support this usage. Index: util.c Creating a cbfs archive now requires creation of a NULL file covering the file system space. Index: cbfs.h Add a DELETED file type with value 0. Any file can be marked deleted by zero its type; this is a FLASH-friendly definition for all known FLASH types. Signed-off-by: Ronald G. Minnich <rminnich@gmail.com> I think it is a step in the right direction. Could you add the function prototype to cbfstool.h?
