2024-03-28cpu/x86: Link page tables in stage if possibleArthur Heymans
When switching back and forth between 32 to 64 bit mode, for example to call a 32-bits FSP or to call the payload, new page tables in the respective stage will be linked. The advantages of this approach are: - No need to determine a good place for page tables in CBFS that does not overlap. - Works with non memory mapped flash (however all coreboot targets currently do support this) - If later stages can use their own page tables which fits better with the vboot RO/RW flow A disadvantage is that it increases the stage size. This could be improved upon by using 1G pages and generating the pages at runtime. Note: qemu cannot have the page tables in the RO boot medium and needs to relocate them at runtime. This is why keeping the existing code with page tables in CBFS is done for now. 2021-11-25emulation/qemu-i440fx: Use a 4MB ROM by defaultSimon Glass
At present the default ROM for for QEMU is too small for U-Boot to fit. Add a condition to catch this and expand it to a 1MB ROM. This allows booting U-Boot under emulation. It also matches the size used by other emulation boards. This results in confusing (to the VMM developer) writes to read-only memory. As far as I can tell, this issue is weird but harmless, because the code does memcpy to ROM with source == destination. The concensus in the mailing list thread [1] was that it's worthwhile to be fixed regardless. Currently, the MMCONF Kconfigs only support the Enhanced Configuration Access mechanism (ECAM) method for accessing the PCI config address space. Some platforms have a different way of mapping the PCI config space to memory. This drops VBOOT_NO_BOARD_SUPPORT. There is little impact of always having recovery_mode_switch() implemented in bootmode.c. A weak write_protect_state() is not necessary as there is no BOOT_DEVICE_SPI_FLASH with the emulation. Call to fill_lb_gpios() is already guarded with CONFIG(CHROMEOS) so the weak implementation would not be referenced. For coreboot proper, I/O APIC programming is not really required, except for the APIC ID field. We generally do not guard the related set_ioapic_id() or setup_ioapic() calls with CONFIG(IOAPIC). In practice it's something one cannot leave unselected, but maintain the Kconfig for the time being. To work around various bugs running KVM enabled, copy page tables to DRAM in assembly before jumping to x86_64 mode. Tested on QEMU using KVM, no more stange bugs happen: Tested on host - CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ - Linux 5.9 - qemu 4.2.1 Used to crash on emulating MMX instructions and failed to translate some addresses using the virtual MMU when running in long mode. Tested on host - CPU AMD EPYC 7401P 24-Core Processor - Linux 5.4 - qemu 4.2.1 Used to crash on jumping to long mode. 2020-06-19Kconfig: Escape variable to accommodate new Kconfig versionsPatrick Georgi
Kconfig 4.17 started using the $(..) syntax for environment variable expansion while we want to keep expansion to the build system. Older Kconfig versions (like ours) simply drop the escapes, not changing the behavior. While we could let Kconfig expand some of the variables, that only splits the handling in two places, making debugging harder and potentially messing with reproducible builds (e.g. when paths end up in configs), so escape them all. Qemu does not have a real CAR but postcar stage is still useful for testing the stage. The postcar stage is also mandatory for x86_64 to setup pagetables for x86_64 ramstage. Do not set up MTRRs, as qemu ignores them anyways. Tested on qemu-i440fx and qemu-q35. Invert the default instead of selecting it everywhere. Restores the ability to use its Kconfig prompt. Beside Qemu targets, the only platforms that didn't select it seem to be samsung/exynos5420, intel/cannonlake, and intel/icelake. The latter two were about to be patched anyway. Per our discussions with Gerd, qemu will now always do native graphics on coreboot. The VGA BIOS capability is not needed and will no longer be supported. Attempts to build without native graphics will result in an error. This code builds for both x86 emulation targets. I'm hitting an issue testing that is unrelated to coreboot; if someone can test, that would be helpful. Be sure to start qemu with -vga std.
