This patch addresses the same problem as CB:48429, but hopefully this
time correctly. Since the mcache is not guaranteed to be available on
the first CBFS lookup for some special cases, we can no longer treat it
as a one-time fire-and-forget initialization. Instead, we test
cbd->mcache_size to check if the mcache has been initialized yet, and
keep trying on every lookup if we don't find it the first time.
Since the mcache is a hard requirement for TOCTOU safety, also make it
more clear in Kconfig that configurations known to do CBFS accesses
before CBMEM init are incompatbile with that, and make sure we die()
rather than do something unsafe if there's a case that Kconfig didn't
catch.

There have been a few issues with the new CBFS mcache code in stages
after romstage, where the mcache resides in CBMEM. In a few special
cases the stage may be doing a CBFS lookup before calling
cbmem_initialize(). To avoid breaking those cases, this patch makes the
CBFS code fall back to a lookup from flash if CBMEM hasn't been
reinitialized yet in those stages.

This patch adds the first stage of the new CONFIG_CBFS_VERIFICATION
feature. It's not useful to end-users in this stage so it cannot be
selected in menuconfig (and should not be used other than for
development) yet. With this patch coreboot can verify the metadata hash
of the RO CBFS when it starts booting, but it does not verify individual
files yet. Likewise, verifying RW CBFSes with vboot is not yet
supported.
Verification is bootstrapped from a "metadata hash anchor" structure
that is embedded in the bootblock code and marked by a unique magic
number. This anchor contains both the CBFS metadata hash and a separate
hash for the FMAP which is required to find the primary CBFS. Both are
verified on first use in the bootblock (and halt the system on failure).
The CONFIG_TOCTOU_SAFETY option is also added for illustrative purposes
to show some paths that need to be different when full protection
against TOCTOU (time-of-check vs. time-of-use) attacks is desired. For
normal verification it is sufficient to check the FMAP and the CBFS
metadata hash only once in the bootblock -- for TOCTOU verification we
do the same, but we need to be extra careful that we do not re-read the
FMAP or any CBFS metadata in later stages. This is mostly achieved by
depending on the CBFS metadata cache and FMAP cache features, but we
allow for one edge case in case the RW CBFS metadata cache overflows
(which may happen during an RW update and could otherwise no longer be
fixed because mcache size is defined by RO code). This code is added to
demonstrate design intent but won't really matter until RW CBFS
verification can be supported.

This patch introduces two new CBFS API functions which are equivalent to
cbfs_map() and cbfs_load(), respectively, with the difference that they
always operate on the read-only CBFS region ("COREBOOT" FMAP section).
Use it to replace some of the simple cases that needed to use
cbfs_locate_file_in_region().

This patch renames cbfs_boot_map_with_leak() and cbfs_boot_load_file()
to cbfs_map() and cbfs_load() respectively. This is supposed to be the
start of a new, better organized CBFS API where the most common
operations have the most simple and straight-forward names. Less
commonly used variants of these operations (e.g. cbfs_ro_load() or
cbfs_region_load()) can be introduced later. It seems unnecessary to
keep carrying around "boot" in the names of most CBFS APIs if the vast
majority of accesses go to the boot CBFS (instead, more unusual
operations should have longer names that describe how they diverge from
the common ones).
cbfs_map() is paired with a new cbfs_unmap() to allow callers to cleanly
reap mappings when desired. A few new cbfs_unmap() calls are added to
generic code where it makes sense, but it seems unnecessary to introduce
this everywhere in platform or architecture specific code where the boot
medium is known to be memory-mapped anyway. In fact, even for
non-memory-mapped platforms, sometimes leaking a mapping to the CBFS
cache is a much cleaner solution than jumping through hoops to provide
some other storage for some long-lived file object, and it shouldn't be
outright forbidden when it makes sense.
Additionally, remove the type arguments from these function signatures.
The goal is to eventually remove type arguments for lookup from the
whole CBFS API. Filenames already uniquely identify CBFS files. The type
field is just informational, and there should be APIs to allow callers
to check it when desired, but it's not clear what we gain from forcing
this as a parameter into every single CBFS access when the vast majority
of the time it provides no additional value and is just clutter.

cbfs_boot_locate() is supposed to be deprecated eventually, after slowly
migrating all APIs to bypass it. That means common features (like
RO-fallback or measurement) need to be moved to the new
cbfs_boot_lookup().
Also export the function externally. Since it is a low-level API and
most code should use the higher-level loading or mapping functions
instead, put it into a new <cbfs_private.h> to raise the mental barrier
for using this API (this will make more sense once cbfs_boot_locate() is
removed from <cbfs.h>).

This patch adds a new CBFS "mcache" (metadata cache) -- a memory buffer
that stores the headers of all CBFS files. Similar to the existing FMAP
cache, this cache should reduce the amount of SPI accesses we need to do
every boot: rather than having to re-read all CBFS headers from SPI
flash every time we're looking for a file, we can just walk the same
list in this in-memory copy and finally use it to directly access the
flash at the right position for the file data.
This patch adds the code to support the cache but doesn't enable it on
any platform. The next one will turn it on by default.

This patch hooks coreboot up to the new commonlib/bsd CBFS
implementation. This is intended as the "minimum viable patch" that
makes the new implementation useable with the smallest amount of changes
-- that is why some of this may look a bit roundabout (returning the
whole metadata for a file but then just using that to fill out the rdevs
of the existing struct cbfsf). Future changes will migrate the higher
level CBFS APIs one-by-one to use the new implementation directly
(rather than translated into the results of the old one), at which point
this will become more efficient.

When CONFIG_SEPARATE_VERSTAGE=n, all verstage code gets linked into the
appropriate calling stage (bootblock or romstage). This means that
ENV_VERSTAGE is actually 0, and instead ENV_BOOTBLOCK or ENV_ROMSTAGE
are 1. This keeps tripping up people who are just trying to write a
simple "are we in verstage (i.e. wherever the vboot init logic runs)"
check, e.g. for TPM init functions which may run in "verstage" or
ramstage depending on whether vboot is enabled. Those checks will not
work as intended for CONFIG_SEPARATE_VERSTAGE=n.
This patch renames ENV_VERSTAGE to ENV_SEPARATE_VERSTAGE to try to
clarify that this macro can really only be used to check whether code is
running in a *separate* verstage, and clue people in that they may need
to cover the linked-in verstage case as well.

Currently, those who want to use measured boot implemented within
vboot should enable verified boot first, along with sections such
as GBB and RW slots defined with manually written fmd files, even
if they do not actually want to verify anything.
As discussed in CB:34977, measured boot should be decoupled from
verified boot and make them two fully independent options. Crypto
routines necessary for measurement could be reused, and TPM and CRTM
init should be done somewhere other than vboot_logic_executed() if
verified boot is not enabled.
In this revision, only TCPA log is initialized during bootblock.
Before TPM gets set up, digests are not measured into tpm immediately,
but cached in TCPA log, and measured into determined PCRs right after
TPM is up.
This change allows those who do not want to use the verified boot
scheme implemented by vboot as well as its requirement of a more
complex partition scheme designed for chromeos to make use of the
measured boot functionality implemented within vboot library to
measure the boot process.

purpose to the existing commonlib, with the difference that all files
under this subdirectory shall be licensed under the BSD-3-Clause license
(or compatible permissive license). The goal is to allow more code to be
shared with libpayload in the future.
Initially, I'm going to move a few files there that have already been
BSD-licensed in the existing commonlib. I am also exracting most
contents of the often-needed <commonlib/helpers.h> as long as they have
either been written by me (and are hereby relicensed) or have an
existing equivalent in BSD-licensed libpayload code. I am also
relicensing <commonlib/compression.h> (written by me) and
<commonlib/compiler.h> (same stuff exists in libpayload).
Finally, I am extracting the cb_err error code definitions from
<types.h> into a new BSD-licensed header so that future commonlib/bsd
code can build upon a common set of error values. I am making the
assumption here that the enum constants and the half-sentence fragments
of documentation next to them by themselves do not meet the threshold of
copyrightability.

When vboot was first integrated into CBFS it was still part of Google
vendorcode. So to not directly tie custom vendorcode into the core CBFS
library, the concept of cbfs_locator was introduced to decouple core
code from an arbitrary amount of platform-specific implementations that
want to decide where the CBFS can be found.
Nowadays vboot is a core coreboot feature itself, and the locator
concept isn't used by anything else anymore. This patch simplifies the
code by removing it and just calling vboot from the CBFS library
directly. That should make it easier to more closely integrate vboot
into CBFS in the future.

The CBFS master header is a legacy structure that just conveys the same
information we already have from the FMAP these days. We're still
including it to support older CBFS implementations in some payloads, but
there's no need for coreboot itself to follow this indirection anymore.
This patch simplifies the default CBFS locator to just return the CBFS
offset and size from the FMAP directly.

This patch adds an optional pre-RAM cache for the FMAP which most
platforms should be able to use, complementing the recently added
post-RAM FMAP cache in CBMEM. vboot systems currently read the FMAP
about half a dozen times from flash in verstage, which will all be
coalesced into a single read with this patch. It will also help
future vboot improvements since when FMAP reads become "free" vboot
doesn't need to keep track of so much information separately.
In order to make sure we have a single, well-defined point where the new
cache is first initialized, eliminate the build-time hardcoding of the
CBFS section offsets, so that all CBFS accesses explicitly read the
FMAP.
Add FMAP_CACHEs to all platforms that can afford it (other than the
RISC-V things where I have no idea how they work), trying to take the
space from things that look like they were oversized anyway (pre-RAM
consoles and CBFS caches).

The coreboot image can still be updated by adding the file to the RW

This patch adds functionality to compile a C data structure into a raw
binary file, add it to CBFS and allow coreboot to load it at runtime.
This is useful in all cases where we need to be able to have several
larger data sets available in an image, but will only require a small
subset of them at boot (a classic example would be DRAM parameters) or
only require it in certain boot modes. This allows us to load less data
from flash and increase boot speed compared to solutions that compile
all data sets into a stage.
Each structure has to be defined in a separate .c file which contains no
functions and only a single global variable. The data type must be
serialization safe (composed of only fixed-width types, paying attention
to padding). It must be added to CBFS in a Makefile with the 'struct'
file processor.

This patch ports the LZ4 decompression code that debuted in libpayload
last year to coreboot for use in CBFS stages (upgrading the base
algorithm to LZ4's dev branch to access the new in-place decompression
checks). This is especially useful for pre-RAM stages in constrained
SRAM-based systems, which previously could not be compressed due to
the size requirements of the LZMA scratchpad and bounce buffer. The
LZ4 algorithm offers a very lean decompressor function and in-place
decompression support to achieve roughly the same boot speed gains
(trading compression ratio for decompression time) with nearly no
memory overhead.
For now we only activate it for the stages that had previously not been
compressed at all on non-XIP (read: non-x86) boards. In the future we
may also consider replacing LZMA completely for certain boards, since
which algorithm wins out on boot speed depends on board-specific
parameters (architecture, processor speed, SPI transfer rate, etc.).

Now that cbfs is adding more metadata in the cbfs file
header one needs to access that metadata. Therefore,
add struct cbfsf which tracks the metadata and data
of the file separately. Note that stage and payload
metadata specific to itself is still contained within
the 'data' portion of a cbfs file. Update the cbfs
API to use struct cbfsf. Additionally, remove struct
cbfsd as there's nothing else associated with a cbfs
region aside from offset and size which tracked
by a region_device (thanks, CBFS_ALIGNMENT!).

A new CBFS API is introduced to allow making CBFS access
easier for providing multiple CBFS sources. That is achieved
by decoupling the cbfs source from a CBFS file. A CBFS
source is described by a descriptor. It contains the necessary
properties for walking a CBFS to locate a file. The CBFS
file is then decoupled from the CBFS descriptor in that it's
no longer needed to access the contents of the file.
All of this is accomplished using the regions infrastructure
by repsenting CBFS sources and files as region_devices. Because
region_devices can be chained together forming subregions this
allows one to decouple a CBFS source from a file. This also allows
one to provide CBFS files that came from other sources for
payload and/or stage loading.
The program loading takes advantage of those very properties
by allowing multiple sources for locating a program. Because of
this we can reduce the overhead of loading programs because
it's all done in the common code paths. Only locating the
program is per source.

As per discussion with lawyers[tm], it's not a good idea to
shorten the license header too much - not for legal reasons
but because there are tools that look for them, and giving
them a standard pattern simplifies things.
However, we got confirmation that we don't have to update
every file ever added to coreboot whenever the FSF gets a
new lease, but can drop the address instead.
util/kconfig is excluded because that's imported code that
we may want to synchronize every now and then.

loading. This abstraction can be used to perform more
complicated execution paths such as running a program
on a separate CPU after it has been loaded. Currently
t124 and t132 need to do that in the boot path. Follow
on patches will allow the platform to decide how to
execute a particular program.
Note: the vboot path is largely untouched because it's
already broken in the coreboot.org tree. After getting
all the necessary patches pushed then vboot will be

Two weak functions were added so that architecture specific operations
on each segment of payload or stage can be performed.
Each architecture must define its own operations, otherwise the
behavior will default to do-nothing functions.
This patch has been updated by to fit more in line with
how program loading is currently being done. The API is the
same as the original, but all call sites to stages/payloads
have been updated. This is known to break any archs that use
rmodule loading that needs cache maintenance. That will be fixed
in a forthcoming patch. Also, the vboot paths are left as is
for easier upstreaming of the rest of the vboot patches.

There are 2 methods currently available in coreboot to load
ramstage from romstage: cbfs and vboot. The vboot path had
to be explicitly enabled and code needed to be added to
each chipset to support both. Additionally, many of the paths
were duplicated between the two. An additional complication
is the presence of having a relocatable ramstage which creates
another path with duplication.
To rectify this situation provide a common API through the
use of a callback to load the ramstage. The rest of the
existing logic to handle all the various cases is put in
a common place.

For reasons explained in a previous CL, it might be necessary to "load" a file
from CBFS in place. The loading code in CBFS was, however, zeroing the area of
memory the stage was about to be loaded into. When the CBFS data is located
elsewhere this works fine, but when it isn't you end up clobbering the data
you're trying to load. Also, there's no reason to zero memory we're about to
load something into or have just loaded something into. This change makes it
so that we only zero out the portion of the memory between what was
loaded/decompressed and the final size of the stage in memory.

This patch implements support for vboot firmware selection. The vboot
support is comprised of the following pieces:
1. vboot_loader.c - this file contains the entry point,
vboot_verify_firmware(), for romstage to call in order to perform
vboot selection. The loader sets up all the data for the wrapper
to use.
2. vboot_wrapper.c - this file contains the implementation calling the vboot
API. It calls VbInit() and VbSelectFirmware() with the data supplied
by the loader.
The vboot wrapper is compiled and linked as an rmodule and placed in
cbfs as 'fallback/vboot'. It's loaded into memory and relocated just
like the way ramstage would be. After being loaded the loader calls into
wrapper. When the wrapper sees that a given piece of firmware has been
selected it parses firmware component information for a predetermined
number of components.
Vboot result information is passed to downstream users by way of the
vboot_handoff structure. This structure lives in cbmem and contains
the shared data, selected firmware, VbInitParams, and parsed firwmare
components.
During ramstage there are only 2 changes:
1. Copy the shared vboot data from vboot_handoff to the chromeos acpi
table.
2. If a firmware selection was made in romstage the boot loader
component is used for the payload.
Noteable Information:
- no vboot path for S3.
- assumes that all RW firmware contains a book keeping header for the
components that comprise the signed firmware area.
- As sanity check there is a limit to the number of firmware components
contained in a signed firmware area. That's so that an errant value
doesn't cause the size calculation to erroneously read memory it
shouldn't.
- RO normal path isn't supported. It's assumed that firmware will always
load the verified RW on all boots but recovery.
- If vboot requests memory to be cleared it is assumed that the boot
loader will take care of that by looking at the out flags in
VbInitParams.
Built and booted. Noted firmware select worked on an image with
RW firmware support. Also checked that recovery mode worked as well
by choosing the RO path.

Dynamic cbmem is now a requirement for relocatable ramstage.
This patch replaces the reserve_* fields in the romstage_handoff
structure by using the dynamic cbmem library.
The haswell code is not moved over in this commit, but it should be
safe because there is a hard requirement for DYNAMIC_CBMEM when using
a reloctable ramstage.

Instead of hard coding the policy for how a relocated ramstage
image is saved add an interface. The interface consists of two
functions. cache_loaded_ramstage() and load_cached_ramstage()
are the functions to cache and load the relocated ramstage,
respectively. There are default implementations which cache and
load the relocated ramstage just below where the ramstage runs.

Accessing the flash part where the ramstage resides can be slow
when loading it. In order to save time in the S3 resume path a copy
of the relocated ramstage is saved just below the location the ramstage
was loaded. Then on S3 resume the cached version of the relocated
ramstage is copied back to the loaded address.
This is achieved by saving the ramstage entry point in the
romstage_handoff structure as reserving double the amount of memory
required for ramstage. This approach saves the engineering time to make
the ramstage reentrant.
The fast path in this change will only be taken when the chipset's
romstage code properly initializes the s3_resume field in the
romstage_handoff structure. If that is never set up properly then the
fast path will never be taken.
e820 entries from Linux:
BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000007bf21000-0x000000007bfbafff] reserved
BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000007bfbb000-0x000000007bffffff] type 16
The type 16 is the cbmem table and the reserved section contains the two
copies of the ramstage; one has been executed already and one is
the cached relocated program.
With this change the S3 resume path on the basking ridge CRB shows
to be ~200ms to hand off to the kernel:
