2023-10-11Kconfig: Bring HEAP_SIZE to a common, large valuePatrick Georgi
We have a tiny HEAP_SIZE by default, except when we don't, and mainboards that override it, or not. Since memory isn't exactly at a premium these days, and unused heap doesn't cost anything extra, just crank it up to the highest value we have in the tree by default and remove all overrides. 2023-09-14x86: Add .data section support for pre-memory stagesJeremy Compostella
x86 pre-memory stages do not support the `.data` section and as a result developers are required to include runtime initialization code instead of relying on C global variable definition. To illustrate the impact of this lack of `.data` section support, here are two limitations I personally ran into: 1. The inclusion of libgfxinit in romstage for Raptor Lake has required some changes in libgfxinit to ensure data is initialized at runtime. In addition, we had to manually map some `.data` symbols in the `_bss` region. 2. CBFS cache is currently not supported in pre-memory stages and enabling it would require to add an initialization function and find a generic spot to call it. Other platforms do not have that limitation. Hence, resolving it would help to align code and reduce compilation based restriction (cf. the use of `ENV_HAS_DATA_SECTION` compilation flag in various places of coreboot code). We identified three cases to consider: 1. eXecute-In-Place pre-memory stages - code is in SPINOR - data is also stored in SPINOR but must be linked in Cache-As-RAM and copied there at runtime 2. `bootblock` stage is a bit different as it uses Cache-As-Ram but the memory mapping and its entry code different 3. pre-memory stages loaded in and executed from Cache-As-RAM (cf. `CONFIG_NO_XIP_EARLY_STAGES`). eXecute-In-Place pre-memory stages (#1) require the creation of a new ELF segment as the code segment Virtual Memory Address and Load Memory Address are identical but the data needs to be linked in cache-As-RAM (VMA) but to be stored right after the code (LMA). Here is the output `readelf --segments` on a `romstage.debug` ELF binary. Since we need the data section `VirtAddr` to be in the Cache-As-Ram and its `PhysAddr` right after the `.text` section, the use of a new segment is mandatory. `bootblock` (#2) also uses this new segment to store the data right after the code and load it to Cache-As-RAM at runtime. However, the code involved is different. Not eXecute-In-Place pre-memory stages (#3) do not really need any special work other than enabling a data section as the code and data VMA / LMA translation vector is the same. TEST=#1 and #2 verified on rex and qemu 32 and 64 bits: - The `bootblock.debug`, `romstage.debug` and `verstage.debug` all have data stored at the end of the `.text` section and code to copy the data content to the Cache-As-RAM. - The CBFS stages included in the final image has not improperly relocated any of the `.data` section symbol. - Test purposes global data symbols we added in bootblock, romstage and verstage are properly accessible at runtime #3: for "Intel Apollolake DDR3 RVP1" board, we verified that the generated romstage ELF includes a .data section similarly to a regular memory enabled stage. The prefix POSTCODE makes it clear that the macro is a post code. Hence, replace related macros starting with POST to POSTCODE and also replace every instance the macros are invoked with the new name. 2023-05-18cpu/qemu-x86/cache_as_ram_bootblock: drop duplicated post codeAlexander Goncharov
Before the bootblock stage starts setting up the CAR mode, it sends `POST_BOOTBLOCK_CAR` POST code. However, before the definition for `POST_BOOTBLOCK_CAR` was introduced in the commit 0d34a50a360228138ade623e799b03eaba83b0a5 , the value `0x20` was used. At that point, `0x20` means "entry into CAR mode" and `0x21` means "the cache memory region is cleared". Right now we are sending the same POST code twice, which makes no sense. So we can do the following (todo: drop me after we decided which one is more appropriate): 1) Drop it (current patchset does exactly that) 2) Introduce POST code similar to POST_SOC_CLEARING_CAR and use it before the cache memory region is cleared. 2023-02-09arch/x86/include/cpu: introduce CPU_TABLE_END CPU table terminatorFelix Held
Instead of having a magic entry in the CPU device ID table list to tell find_cpu_driver that it has reached the end of the list, introduce and use CPU_TABLE_END. Since the vendor entry in the CPU device ID struct is compared against X86_VENDOR_INVALID which is 0, use X86_VENDOR_INVALID instead of the 0 in the CPU_TABLE_END definition. 2023-02-08arch/x86/cpu: introduce and use device_match_maskFelix Held
Instead of always doing exact matches between the CPUID read in identify_cpu and the device entries of the CPU device ID table, offer the possibility to use a bit mask in the CPUID matching. This allows covering all steppings of a CPU family/model with one entry and avoids that case of a missing new stepping causing the CPUs not being properly initialized. Some of the CPU device ID tables can now be deduplicated using the CPUID_ALL_STEPPINGS_MASK define, but that's outside of the scope of this patch. 2023-02-07src: Move POST_BOOTBLOCK_CAR to common postcodes and use itMartin Roth
This moves the definition for POST_BOOTBLOCK_CAR from the intel-specific postcodes into the common postcode list, and uses it for the cache-as-RAM init as needed. Because POST_BOOTBLOCK_CAR was set to 0x20 in some spots and 0x21 in most of the others, the values were consolidated into 0x21. This will change the value on some platforms. Any conflicts should get sorted out later in the conversion process. 2021-10-26cpu/x86: Introduce and use `CPU_X86_LAPIC`Felix Held
With using a Kconfig option to add the x86 LAPIC support code to the build, there's no need for adding the corresponding directory to subdirs in the CPU/SoC Makefile. Comparing which CPU/SoC Makefiles added (cpu/)x86/mtrr and (cpu/)x86/lapic before this and the corresponding MTRR code selection patch and having verified that all platforms added the MTRR code on that patch shows that soc/example/min86 and soc/intel/quark are the only platforms that don't end up selecting the LAPIC code. So for now the default value of CPU_X86_LAPIC is chosen as y which gets overridden to n in the Kconfig of the two SoCs mentioned above. 2021-10-25cpu,soc/x86: always include cpu/x86/mtrr on x86 CPUs/SoCsFelix Held
All x86-based CPUs and SoCs in the coreboot tree end up including the Makefile in cpu/x86/mtrr, so include this directly in the Makefile in cpu/x86 to add it for all x86 CPUs/SoCs. In the unlikely case that a new x86 CPU/SoC will be added, a CPU_X86_MTRR Kconfig option that is selected be default could be added and the new CPU/SoC without MTRR support can override this option that then will be used in the Makefile to guard adding the Makefile from the cpu/x86/mtrr sub-directory. In cpu/intel all models except model 2065X and 206AX are selcted by a socket and rely on the socket's Makefile.inc to add x86/mtrr to the subdirs, so those models don't add x86/mtrr themselves. The Intel Broadwell SoC selects CPU_INTEL_HASWELL and which added x86/mtrr to the subdirs. The Intel Xeon SP SoC directory contains two sub-folders for different versions or generations which both add x86/mtrr to the subdirs in their Makefiles. The code under `cpu/x86/tsc` is only compiled in when its `Makefile.inc` is included from platform (CPU/SoC) code and the `UDELAY_TSC` Kconfig option is enabled. Include `cpu/x86/tsc/Makefile.inc` once from `cpu/x86/Makefile.inc` and drop the now-redundant inclusions from platform code. Also, deduplicate the `UDELAY_TSC` guards. Introduce the `ARCH_ALL_STAGES_X86` Kconfig symbol to automatically select the per-stage arch options. Subsequent commits will leverage this to allow choosing between 32-bit and 64-bit coreboot where all stages are x86. AMD Picasso and AMD Cezanne are the only exceptions to this rule: they disable `ARCH_ALL_STAGES_X86` and explicitly set the per-stage arch options accordingly. 2021-01-07arch/x86: Move prologue to .init sectionKyösti Mälkki
For arch/x86 the realmode part has to be located within the same 64 KiB as the reset vector. Some older intel platforms also require 4 KiB alignment for _start16bit. To enforce the above, and to separate required parts of .text without matching *(.text.*) rules in linker scripts, tag the pre-C environment assembly code with section .init directive. Description of .init section for ELF: This section holds executable instructions that contribute to the process initialization code. When a program starts to run, the system arranges to execute the code in this section before calling the main program entry point (called main for C programs). 2020-10-12cpu/qemu-x86/cache_as_ram_bootblock: Fix wrong instructionPatrick Rudolph
The shld instruction does an arithmetic shift left on 64bit operants, but it's not the instruction we want, because what it actually does is shifting by cl, and storing the result in address 32. This wasn't noticed with QEMU as the DRAM is up and address 32 is valid. On real hardware when CAR is running this instruction causes a crash. Replace the instruction with the correct 64bit arithmetic left shift. 2020-09-29cpu/qemu-x86/car: Move long mode entry right before c entryPatrick Rudolph
This fixes non-emulation platforms as those are using 32bit code after the bootblock_crt0 entry, like setting up CAR and updating microcode, which isn't yet converted to support long mode. This is a noop for the only supported x86_64 platform and all x86_32 platforms. Add support for x86_64 bootblock on qemu. Introduce a new approach to long mode support. The previous patch set generated page tables at runtime and placed them in heap. The new approach places the page tables in memory mapped ROM. Introduce a new tool called pgtblgen that creates x86 long mode compatible page tables and writes those to a file. The file is included into the CBFS and placed at a predefined offset. Add assembly code to load the page tables, based on a Kconfig symbol and enter long in bootblock. The code can be easily ported to real hardware bootblock. Tested on qemu q35. 2019-11-03cpu/x86/tsc: Flip and rename TSC_CONSTANT_RATE to UNKNOWN_TSC_RATEKyösti Mälkki
The x86 timers are a bit of a mess. Cases where different stages use different counters and timestamps use different counters from udelays. The original intention was to only flip TSC_CONSTANT_RATE Kconfig to NOT_CONSTANT_TSC_RATE. The name would be incorrect though, those counters do run with a constant rate but we just lack tsc_freq_mhz() implementation for three platforms. Note that for boards with UNKNOWN_TSC_RATE=y, each stage will have a slow run of calibrate_tsc_with_pit(). This is easy enough to fix with followup implementation of tsc_freq_mhz() for the platforms. Implementations with LAPIC_MONOTONIC_TIMER typically will not have tsc_freq_mhz() implemented and default to UNKNOWN_TSC_RATE. However, as they don't use TSC for udelay() the slow calibrate_tsc_with_pit() is avoided. Because x86/tsc_delay.tsc was using two different guards and nb/via/vx900 claimed UDELAY_TSC, but pulled UDELAY_IO implementation, we also switch that romstage to use UDELAY_TSC. This reverts the revert commit 5780d6f3876723b94fbe3653c9d87dad6330862e and fixes the build issue that cuased it to be reverted. Verstage will host vboot2 for firmware verification. It's a stage in the sense that it has its own set of toolchains, compiler flags, and includes. This allows us to easily add object files as needed. But it's directly linked to bootblock. This allows us to avoid code duplication for stage loading and jumping (e.g. cbfs driver) for the boards where bootblock has to run in a different architecture (e.g. Tegra124). 2014-05-06Introduce stage-specific architecture for corebootFurquan Shaikh
Make all three coreboot stages (bootblock, romstage and ramstage) aware of the architecture specific to that stage i.e. we will have CONFIG_ARCH variables for each of the three stages. This allows us to have an SOC with any combination of architectures and thus every stage can be made to run on a completely different architecture independent of others. Thus, bootblock can have an x86 arch whereas romstage and ramstage can have arm32 and arm64 arch respectively. These stage specific CONFIG_ARCH_ variables enable us to select the proper set of toolchain and compiler flags for every stage. These options can be considered as either arch or modes eg: x86 running in different modes or ARM having different arch types (v4, v7, v8). We have got rid of the original CONFIG_ARCH option completely as every stage can have any architecture of its own. Thus, almost all the components of coreboot are identified as being part of one of the three stages (bootblock, romstage or ramstage). The components which cannot be classified as such e.g. smm, rmodules can have their own compiler toolset which is for now set to *_i386. Hence, all special classes are treated in a similar way and the compiler toolset is defined using create_class_compiler defined in Makefile. In order to meet these requirements, changes have been made to CC, LD, OBJCOPY and family to add CC_bootblock, CC_romstage, CC_ramstage and similarly others. Additionally, CC_x86_32 and CC_armv7 handle all the special classes. All the toolsets are defined using create_class_compiler. Few additional macros have been introduced to identify the class to be used at various points, e.g.: CC_$(class) derives the $(class) part from the name of the stage being compiled. We have also got rid of COREBOOT_COMPILER, COREBOOT_ASSEMBLER and COREBOOT_LINKER as they do not make any sense for coreboot as a whole. All these attributes are associated with each of the stages. This patch adds a qemu x86 cpu chip. It has no initialization function as this isn't needed on virtual hardware. A virtual machine can have pretty much any CPU: qemu emulates a wide range of x86 CPUs (try 'qemu -cpu ? for a list), also with 'qemu -cpu host' the guest will see a cpu which is (almost) identical to the one on the host machine. So I've added X86_VENDOR_ANY as wildcard match for the cpu_table.
